Is Monster Hunter Outlanders a gacha game?

Yes. You recruit Adventurers through contracts, at published odds. Pocket Gamer reports that the gacha applies to characters and not to weapons, and that the Buddy gacha was removed after the second closed beta. Our sources are official wherever we can manage it, and the rates on this page come from Garena's probability notice for the launch version. Check the in-game rates page for your own server, since the notice is the Korean edition.

Official rates by banner

The notice uses different names from the English client and from most guides. This table lines them up.

Common nameNotice nameContractBase SSRHard pityLong-run SSR rate
FeaturedSpecial RecruitmentFeatured0.6%901.6063%
RotatingCircuit RecruitmentStandard0.6%901.6063%
StandardGeneral RecruitmentStandard0.6%901.6063%
BeginnerStarter RecruitmentStandard0.6%502.0803%

The long-run rate includes pity, so it's the fairest single number to compare. The SR rate is 9.4% on every banner, and pull 10 guarantees an SR or better if the previous nine had neither.

How soft pity works

After 73 pulls without an SSR, the rate climbs by 6 points with each pull:

Pull since last SSRSSR chance on that pull
1 to 730.6%
746.6%
8042.6%
8572.6%
8996.6%
90100%

This is why results bunch up late. You have about a 36% chance of an SSR by pull 73, but very few runs get past the mid-80s. On average, an SSR takes about 62 pulls.

The 50/50 on limited banners

On Featured and Rotating banners, each SSR has a 50% chance of being the pickup. If it isn't, your next SSR is guaranteed to be. The notice's long-run pickup rate is 1.0709%.

The 120-pull guarantee

The notice adds a second safety net: a pickup within 120 pulls, one time. It works out like this on a fresh banner:

PullsChance of the pickup
308.96%
5014.82%
7423.57%
8051.03%
9059.39%
10063.42%
11970.17%
120100%

The average is 84.8 pulls. Without the guarantee, the unlucky worst case would be 180 pulls, a lost 50/50 at pull 90 followed by another 90.

What carries over between banners

This is the part players most often get wrong, so here's what the notice says:

  • Pity count: carries. Pulls toward your next SSR are shared with other banners of the same type. Featured shares with Featured, and Rotating with Rotating.
  • The 120 count: doesn't carry. It isn't shared with any other Featured or Rotating banner, so unused progress is lost when that banner ends.
  • Beginner and Standard: separate. Their records don't affect other banners.

Our pull or save planner uses these rules to compare spending now with saving for later.

Where the wording is thin

The notice says the Rotating guarantee applies once per Rotating banner. For Featured it only says "one time", then says the record isn't shared with other banners. We read that as once per Featured banner, and Fextralife's text from the game agrees: "Within 120 recruits, once per banner." The planner lets you turn it off if a future banner differs.

The Standard banner's 300-pull choice

The Standard banner mixes SSR adventurers and SSR companions. After two companions in a row, the next SSR must be an adventurer, which is why the notice's long-run rate splits into 0.9179% adventurers and 0.6884% companions. At 300 total pulls you can pick one SSR adventurer or companion, one time. That's how a full pity run can still end in a companion, which some players have complained about.

The Beginner banner's 50 pulls

You get at most 50 pulls here. If you have no SSR adventurer by pull 49, pull 50 is guaranteed to give one. There's no soft pity described. Fextralife and another guide also report that a ten-pull here costs just 8 contracts, so all 50 pulls cost 40.

Does the banner close as soon as you get an SSR? GameWith says so in one line, but the same page also says you can pull 50 times. The official notice says it ends after 50 pulls, Fextralife says it "will close once the limit is reached", and the notice's 2.0803% rate only works for a banner that keeps running. So we believe it runs to pull 50, but check your own client.

Common questions

Does a pickup reset my pity?

Any SSR resets the count to your next SSR, and a pickup also clears your guarantee. The 120 guarantee no longer matters on that banner once you own the pickup.

No. The notice keeps those two records separate, and they use different contracts.

How much does a guaranteed pickup cost?

120 pulls at 150 Rutacoin each is 18,000 Rutacoin, before counting any free contracts. See our contracts guide for what you can earn without paying.
